Philosophy
My first goal is to provide an atmosphere of privacy, safety, and acceptance. I want to hear what is on your mind and provide you the space to think and explore. Periodically I will ask for clarification and comment on your feelings. The task is to build a safe environment for your use and to build trust in our therapeutic relationship. Within the context of this relationship you will learn more about yourself, your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. In addition, you will learn to make links between your past and present.
Each patient’s therapeutic relationship is unique. Our relationship will develop from the interaction of our personalities. Within the context of our relationship you will learn more about yourself. With this knowledge you will be better prepared to build satisfying relationships with those you love.
We meet together for several sessions to assess your situation, need for treatment, and to determine if you have found the right therapist. If the fit is not right I will help in a referral to another psychotherapist. Otherwise we will begin psychotherapy at a frequency of 1 -2 times per week for 45 minutes sessions. If we have decided that a course of psychoanalysis is right for you we will meet 3-4 times per week for 45 minutes a session.
In both psychotherapy and psychoanalysis you will be assured of complete privacy unless there is a duty to report your intention to harm yourself or someone else.
Beginning of Treatment
As you begin treatment - whether psychotherapy or psychoanalysis -it is important for you to know that you may begin to experience intense feelings that are unfamiliar and uncomfortable. In fact many individuals experience what seems to be more pain before the original pain is alleviated. This is an expected part of the process and I encourage you to talk about these feelings. I also provide therapy for couples if that is indicated. In couple's therapy we work together to meet your goals and help improve your communication skills.
