Psychoanalysis vs. Psychotherapy

I offer both psychoanalysis and psychotherapy  The same techniques described earlier are used in both treatments. It is in the context of our unique  relationship that you will safe to explore your inner world and begin to understand your thoughts, feelings, motivations, and complexities of your relationships.  Psychotherapy is conducted in 1 - 2 sessions a week (45 minutes per session) in face to face meetings.  Psychoanalysis is a more extended course of treatment and occurs 3 -5 times a week (45 minute sessions) and is aimed at resolving the very deep, underlying issues.

Often individuals find themselves disturbed by particular symptoms, reactions and feelings and find it difficult to manage these feelings. They cannot understand why.  Unconscious factors can determine our emotions and behaviors and create difficulties in work, intimate relationships or self esteem.    Because the forces  are unconscious, the advice of friends and family, the reading of self help books, or even sheer willpower , often fail to provide relief.

In psychoanalytic treatment we will look at how these unconscious factors affect current relationships and patterns of behavior.  We will look at their historical origins and help you deal with the realities of life.

Patients sometimes ask if psychoanalytic treatment will be worth the considerable expense.  Like all professionally trained analysts, I have completed years as a patient in analysis myself  From personal experience I believe that it is an investment with a huge return for yourself, your loved ones, and the next generation.  If you are a therapist, counselor, teacher, or physician, what you learn in psychoanalysis is directly relevant to your work.  From artist to lawyer to salesman, many patients find their work enhanced by the emotional freedom they find in psychoanalysis or psychotherapy.
